When to capitalize the first letter of a quote
- If the quote is the beginning of YOUR sentence, capitalize it. "These are the wrong sorts of bees," said Pooh.
- If the quote is a complete sentence, capitalize the first letter. In an article for the New York Times, Mark Smith wrote, "A dog is truly man's best friend."
- If the quote is a fragment that you fit into your own sentence, don't capitalize the first letter. John Smith loved America, calling it "a wonderful place, full of adventure and excitement."
