When to use White Space
What is white space?
White space is a gap in the essay. Hit enter once so that there is a blank line between paragraphs.
When should I use it?
I like to use a little white space to signify a major change in an essay. That little gap tells the readers that we are switching gears, moving into another section. White space can be a nice visual cue in longer essays, at least five or six pages in length.
When shouldn't I use it?
Don't add white space in a short essay of less than five pages, give or take a bit.
Why not?
Two reasons:
- It isn't necessary. In a short essay, paragraphs are all the distinction you really need.
- It looks like a cheap trick a fourth grader might pull to make his essay look longer. Sorry, but it's true.
