Have versus Of
This one's actually pretty easy. The only reason anyone would ever confuse the two is because they sound similar when spoken quickly.
HAVE is a verb
OF is a preposition
The confusion tends to come up when one writes "should have" or "would have," as in "You should have written the right word here."
OF is never the right word in that kind of context.
Use OF as a preposition, as in "Here, have this plate of cookies." OF starts the prepositional phrase "of cookies," which tells us what kind of plate we are talking about.
